Guardianships & Conservatorships
Guardianship. When an individual is caring for another, without legal authority for decision making for that person, then a guardianship may be appropriate.
- Of a minor: When parents are unable or are not caring for their child, then someone can petition to be appointed as the child’s guardian. This does not replace the parent or terminate the parents’ rights but allows another adult (most often a relative) to continue to care for the child and also make legal decisions, such as health care, education, financial decisions, for the child.
- Of an Adult: Similar to guardianship of a minor, when an adult is responsible for the care of another who is unable to make decisions for him or herself, then a petition can be filed to be appointed as the adult’s guardian.
Conservatorship. Sometimes an adult needs help managing his/her financial or legal affairs. A conservatorship is put in place to assist that individual by having someone make those decisions.
Adoptions

There are several different types of adoption, depending on the relationship between the child and petitioner. This is a very rewarding process.
- Step parent adoption
- 5th degree relation adoption
- Direct placement adoption
Adoptions occur “behind the scenes” and it is very likely that the adopting parent and child need never to go to court. There is the option for a celebration in court to confirm the adoption, if the family chooses.
